当大学最初の日本人留学生が1906年に卒業して以来、148人の日本からの学生が、学部短期留学（ＪＹＡ）プログラムや、学士・修士獲得を目的としたプログラムで学んでいます。とくに人気のあるプログラムには、国際関係学、国際開発学、英語教授法、教育学やビジネスなどがあります。
また当大学は長年にわたり、早稲田大学、一ツ橋大学、慶応大学、関西大学や神戸大学などと積極的に友好関係を築いてきました。さらに当大学は、早稲田大学も最近仲間入りしたUniversitas 21の加盟大学であり、そのことを誇りに思っています。

The University of Birmingham offers a very warm welcome to students from Japan. Our first Japanese student graduated in 1906 and we now have 148 Japanese students on campus attending our Study Abroad Programme (also known as JYA) or taking an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme. Popular subjects include International Studies, International Development, TEFL/TESL, Education and Business. We are the proud possessor of long-standing and active links with many Japanese universities including Waseda, Hitotsubashi, Keio, Kansai and Kobe. We are also proud to be a member of the Universitas 21 scheme which Waseda University has recently joined.
